I observe that the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has, time and time again, opted for old guards to secure success in major tournaments. Yet, time and time again, they disappointed us, the badminton fans.
Should we still depend on them? Don’t we have a choice? May be a better choice in the young crop of players that have shown their mettle in the international arena lately.
For the Beijing Olympic singles crown, Lee Chong Wei is a good choice. His performance at the Thomas Cup in Jakarta, Singapore Open and Malaysian Open, speak volumes of his tenacity, fighting spirit and the will to win attitude. In the process, he even made short work of the world number one.
As for Hafiz Hashim, I think it is about time he hangs his racquet. Sending him will be a criminal wasting of tax payers’ money, a part from being mockery to himself ... almost always bundled in the first round!
As for the doubles, Chong – Lee are inconsistent and injury-prone. They have twice participated in the Olympic Games without winning any medal. Should we still depend on this unpredictable pair.
Zakry – Fairuzizan would be a better choice. They have proven their mettle at the Thomas Cup, Singapore Open and Indonesian Open. Moreover, they are young, energetic and with a better discipline in court. Even if they fail to secure any medal at the forthcoming Beijing Olympic, they still have a chance to do it at the next Olympics, given the right exposure.
It is about time BAM officials put on their thinking caps and weigh carefully all the options before them.
