The non-stop spat between Islamist PAS and secular DAP has reached a point of no return and put Azmin in real quandary. The problems faced by Azmin now are more perplexing compared to the past Selangor Menteri Besar crisis. Both parties have given ultimatum to Azmin to choose between them, DAP or PAS. They just can't work together in the same Coalition due to the continuous conflicting philosophies and idealogies which result in the severing of ties declared by PAS Dewan Ulama recently .
As a Selangor Menteri Besar, Azmin has to make a quick and wise decision to save the coalition. A breakup will lead to a collapsed Selangor Government and most likely the Sultan will have to intervene and advise them to hold a snap election.
Since its inception, DAP has been very consistent with its sosialist policies while PAS is very adamant to implement its Hudud Syariah Law. But, their joint dreams to topple BN has turned them into a reluctant sleeping partners through marriage of convenience with PKR. Now, it looks like their marriage has dashed into nightmare.
In recent PAS Muktamar, the highly revered Dewan Ulama had decided to sever its ties with DAP which continues to attack them for its Hudud Policies. Majority of the PAS delegates at the Muktamar had overwhelmingly accepted the Ulama's decision without debate. Hence, it has become the last straw that breaks the camel's back.
During the Muktamar's party election, the Ulama factions had soundly trounced the Anwarinas, the professional and progressive group who are aligned to Anwar Ibrahim. All the top posts were swept by the Ulama factions.
Immediately after the Assembly, Mat Sabu and few Penang State Government representatives from PAS declared that they would relinquish all their posts in the State Government. Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng who is also DAP Secretary General, welcomed it wholeheartedly.
Azmin has yet to make the difficult decision while Guan Eng has been pressuring other PAS representatives to leave the Penang State Government posts.
In my opinion, deep in Azmin's heart, he would prefer to work with DAP due to their common liberal policies. Unfortunately, Azmin is indebted to PAS for supporting him to be a Menteri Besar. So, for now he just can't dump aside PAS. On the other hand, DAP wanted Dr Wan Azizah to be MB because she is weak and can be easily manipulated by them.
Without Anwar as a glue to patch up the split, it looks like the Coalition is heading towards a political disaster. As said by Loke, the Coalition breakup is beyond repair. The only thing that make them stay together for a short while is to save the Selangor State Government from collapse and to avoid a snap election..
Selangor Government will collapse or become a hung Government if either PAS or DAP split from the Coalition. The irony is that PKR with only 13 seats is now a kingmaker to save Selangor ship from sinking.
To save the situation, I believe, Azmin will play it safe by delaying the decision with multiple lame excuses. He will drag the decision may be until the next election.
Meanwhile a new political development is brewing. PasMa, a splinter of PAS, has just announced their intention to form a new political party. PasMa members comprised of former PAS professionals and liberal-minded members. Azmin has welcomed their move to form a new political party and will consider their request to join Pakatan if they conform to Pakatan's Common Policy Framework.
This clearly shows that Azmin prefers them to PAS because of their like-mindedness. DAP will definitely welcome them to replace PAS which has become a torn in Pakatan's flesh. All of these will be known before the next general election.
In another new development, Pak Samad, the national laureate, has announced his intention to join DAP. What a surprise development! A Malay nationalist who fights teeth and nail for Bahasa Melayu and Malay culture, has finally kowtowed to chauvinistic DAP. DAP is very consistent with their chauvinistic, socialist and liberal-minded policies. Their Malaysian Malaysia slogan and concept will not change colour.
More interesting political developments are brewing in Malaysia! Watch out!
